Industry Partnerships
The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics interacts extensively with business and industry both regionally and nationally.
The Center for UMass-Industry Research on Polymers (CUMIRP) is a collaboration between UMass Amherst and industrial sponsors that facilitates research, stimulates industrial innovation, and enhances education in the field of polymers. The longest running NSF-established Industry University Cooperative Research Center, CUMIRP is currently supported by industrial sponsors, US Government laboratories, and the NSF.
The Department of Computer Science, ranked among the top computer science departments in the nation by the National Research Council and U.S. News and World Report, actively develops relationships with industrial partners through its Industrial Affiliates Program.
The UMass Amherst office of Research Liaison & Development is committed to maximizing the value of UMASS Amherst as a partner to industry and as a contributor to an economically successful state and region through enabling and promoting interdisciplinary research initiatives that benefit from industry and government participation.
The Regional Technology Corporation is a non-profit catalyst for growth and development of technology-based industries in Western Massachusetts and the broader "Knowledge Corridor" by facilitating partnerships between regional technology-based companies and UMass Amherst faculty and research projects.
The Collaborative Biomedical Research Program affiliates UMass Amherst and Baystate Medical Center in biomedical research and technology. This collaborative program brings together the best of two traditionally different approaches to the study of biomedical science--the clinical programs at Baystate and the basic molecular and cellular biologic research at UMass to develop a better understanding of and new strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.
The research institute for nanotechnology at UMass Amherst, MassNanoTech coordinates research on nanoscale materials, devices and systems and advances nanotechnology commercialization in collaboration with industry partners.
The Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing (CHM), one of only 16 NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centers in the nation, focuses on moving nanotechnology from laboratory innovation to manufacturable components and devices, with an emphasis on nanoelectronics, bionanotechnology, and new materials and processes.
Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute is a partnership between Baystate Medical Center and UMass Amherst. Biomedical research at PVLSI is dedicated to improving human health by developing creative new approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. By coupling the unique resources of a major research university with one of the largest teaching hospitals in New England, we continue to create interactive teams of allied health professionals, life scientists and physical scientists to focus on clinical disorders and technologies. This multi-dimensional, interdisciplinary collaborative approach speeds the development of both ideas and products from the bench-top to the bedside.
Massachusetts Center for Renewable Energy Science and Technology (MassCREST) is focused on increasing the performance of selected renewable energy devices and systems by ten-fold by 2017, with an emphasis on rapidly translate leading-edge research on photovoltaics, future fuels, and fuel cells and batteries into valuable and marketable processes, technologies, and techniques.
