NSM Awards Ceremony 2005

WhitakerOn Wednesday, April 13, 2005, the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics hosted its first Awards Ceremony in honor of the students, faculty, and alumni who exemplify excellence.

Over 300 people attended, primarily the top students from NSM with family and guests, as well as NSM faculty, donors, and alumni. The evening began with photo sessions with Chancellor Lombardi and Dean Osterweil for any student or guest who wished to pose with them, followed by welcoming remarks from both the Dean and the Chancellor.

HarringtonA total of 87 student awards were presented, some of which had multiple recipients. All in all 112 students received awards. In addition, three alumni were recognized as Distinguished Alumni Award Winners: Donald J. Ciappenelli, Ph.D. (Chemistry), Raphael "Ray" P. D'Alonzo, Ph.D. (Chemistry), and Randolph W. Bromery, PH.D (UMass Amherst Honorary LHD '79).

Six faculty members were recognized for their outstanding contibutions in Teaching: Bruce E. Byers (Biology); Research: Bret E. Jackson (Chemistry), and Raymond S. Bradley (Geosciences); Service: W. Bruce Croft (Computer Science), and W. Brian O'Connor (Biology); and Leadership: Robert B. Hallock (Physics). Three others received University recognitions: Promotion to University Distinguished Professor: Thomas P. Russell (Polymer Science & Engineering), and James F. Kurose (Computer Science); Chancellor's Medal: Thomas P. Russell (Polymer Science & Engineering).
